Atmos Renewables has appointed construction firm Enerven to build the balance-of-plant works for its 400 MW/1,600 MWh Teebar battery energy storage system in Queensland, Australia, with site mobilisation starting this month and commercial operation targeted for late 2028.
Enerven’s scope includes design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the battery facility, a 275/33-kV substation and about 980 feet of 275-kV overhead transmission line connecting Teebar to Powerlink Queensland’s network. Site mobilisation is expected in October, with representatives from Atmos, Enerven, Valo and Powerlink scheduled to mark the start of construction on October 20, and commercial operation targeted for late 2028.
The project reached a financial milestone earlier this month. Atmos Renewables reached financial close on the 400 MW/1,600 MWh Teebar battery energy storage system in Queensland, backed by Australia’s federal Capacity Investment Scheme. Teebar BESS is located beside Powerlink’s Teebar Creek substation in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region and will provide 4 hours of storage duration, charging when supply is abundant and discharging during periods of higher demand.
Battery technology for the project comes from Valo, a storage integrator formed as a joint venture between Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions. The battery system has secured Generator Performance Standards approval for grid-forming operation in the National Electricity Market, a capability attracting increasing attention as Australia adds more renewable generation to the grid. The Teebar contract lifts Valo’s Australian energy storage portfolio to more than 7.6 GWh.
For Atmos Renewables, backed by Igneo Infrastructure Partners, the project marks new ground. Atmos Renewables CEO Nigel Baker said the Teebar BESS will be the company’s first BESS in the National Electricity Market and its first construction project in Queensland, complementing over 400 MW of renewable generation assets it currently has operating in the state. The battery is one of several large storage projects moving forward in Queensland as coal plants in the state face retirement and renewable generation expands.

A wider Queensland pipeline
Teebar is not the only large battery moving through approvals in the state. Developer Eku Energy has signed community benefit agreements for two further Queensland projects, the 300 MW/1,160 MWh Byellee battery and the 400 MW/1,600 MWh Belah battery, which are proceeding toward state development applications with operations targeted for 2029.

What to watch
Watch for the October 20 construction-start ceremony at Teebar Creek and for whether Atmos discloses capital cost or financing details it has so far withheld. Queensland’s Byellee and Belah projects will also need state development approval before they can follow Teebar into construction.
