Large-scale capital kept moving into renewable energy projects this week, with sovereign wealth money, project financing and battery tolling deals all setting records across Europe and the United States.
Norway’s wealth fund commits $1.35 billion to CIP’s newest fund
Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), which manages Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, is investing $1.35 billion in Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ fund CI VI, which will primarily invest in generation and storage of renewable energy across North America, Western Europe and the Asia Pacific region. The commitment, announced October 2, expands a partnership that began in 2024, when the Norwegian fund committed about $1.02 billion to CIP’s previous flagship strategy. NBIM’s Harald von Heyden said the deal builds on a partnership that has worked well for the fund since 2024, according to the firm’s statement.
Statkraft and Greenvolt sign the EU’s largest BESS tolling deal
Statkraft and Greenvolt Power have signed a 10-year tolling agreement covering 400MW of battery energy storage systems across two operating projects in Poland, announced September 29. Greenvolt described the agreement as the largest publicly communicated BESS tolling deal in the EU to date. The deal covers the Ełk and Turośń Kościelna projects, each a 4-hour, 200MW/800MWh system, with Statkraft taking the right to decide when the batteries charge and discharge across energy and flexibility markets, according to the companies.
Rezolv Energy lines up €561 million for the EU’s largest onshore project
Romanian developer Rezolv Energy secured a financing package of up to €561 million (USD$630 million) to take its 1.3GW Dama Solar project in Romania into construction. According to the company, the project spans more than 1,000 hectares and is anticipated to generate around 1,800 GWh of clean power annually, which would make it the largest onshore renewable energy project in the EU. The financing was anchored by the European Investment Bank, benefitting from an InvestEU guarantee, with commitments from 14 lenders, and commercial operation is targeted for the second half of 2028.
Clearway starts building 650 MW of solar on former Missouri strip mine land
Clearway Energy Group has started construction on Swan Energy Center, a 650-MW solar facility located on portions of strip-mined land in northwestern Bates County, Missouri. The project is Clearway’s first in Missouri and is contracted under a 20-year power purchase agreement, and is backed by a roughly $1.5 billion investment arranged through a bank consortium led by Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, DNB Bank and National Australia Bank. Clearway says the project will generate enough electricity annually to meet the needs of approximately 200,000 homes once it enters service in 2028.
States and developers back MISO’s faster interconnection queue
A coalition of state regulators and renewable developers has filed support at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for grid operator MISO’s plan to speed up its backlog of interconnection requests, Utility Dive reports. The Organization of MISO States said the approach “can materially accelerate the processing of legacy queue cycles while preserving MISO’s responsibility to identify and address reliability concerns.” The filing adds momentum to one of the largest pending queue reforms among US grid operators.
World’s tallest wind turbine readied for German grid
A 365-metre wind turbine, taller than the Eiffel Tower and billed as the tallest in the world, has been built by German manufacturer Gicon in Lusatia, Germany, according to Factor This. The turbine is scheduled for inauguration on November 19 and is intended to demonstrate taller towers can capture stronger, steadier winds at height. It marks one of the more unusual entries in Germany’s onshore wind buildout this year.
Renewables supply 64% of Portugal’s power demand so far in 2026
Renewable sources covered 64% of Portugal’s electricity demand between January and September 2026, according to Renewables Now. The figure reflects Portugal’s continued build-out of wind, solar and hydro generation and places the country among the EU’s higher-renewable-share power systems for the period.
